Malcolm X Day 2017

May 19, 2017 in the USA

Malcolm X Day takes place on May 19, 2017. Malcolm X Day is an American holiday in honor of the civil rights leader Malcolm X which is celebrated either on May 19 (Malcolm's birthday), or the third Sunday in the month of May. The commemoration has legal status in the city of Berkeley, California. It is also a proposed holiday in Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, D.C, with numerous calls for it to be celebrated alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday.

Malcolm X was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. Detractors accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. (With material from: Wikipedia)
