National Pretzel Day 2015

April 26, 2015 in the USA

National Pretzel Day is celebrated on April 26, 2015. It's a day to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state's history and economy. National Pretzel Day was declared in 2003 by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. A pretzel is a type of baked food made from dough in soft and hard varieties and savory or sweet flavors in a unique knot-like shape, originating in Europe. In the 19th century, southern German and Swiss German immigrants introduced the pretzel to North America. Today, Pennsylvania is the center of American pretzel production for both the hard crispy and the soft bread types of pretzels. The annual United States pretzel industry is worth over $550 million. The average American consumes about 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg) of pretzels per year. (With material from: Wikipedia)
