Ullambana 2016

August 17, 2016 in the World

Ullambana is observed on 15 days, starting from August 17 in 2016. It is a festival, which is celebrated mainly by followers of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. The day is also referred to as Ancestor Day or Ghost Festival. Due to the lunisolar calendar the date varies from year to year in the Gregorian solar calendar. The legend tells that on the first day of Ullambana the gates to hell are opened and the damned souls can visit the world and their families for 15 days. Though it is a festival of the Mahayana tradition, it is committed in slight variations by Theravada Buddhists, for example in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, too.

Ullambana is all about doing good deeds and paying respect and honor to parents and older people in general. In order to alleviate the sufferings of the deceased, a variety of food is offered to their souls. Through the good deeds the faithful want to contribute to their deceased relatives to be reborn in a good life and to end their sufferings. On the 15th and final day of Ullambana people visit cemeteries to remember and honor their deceased family members.
