Eid al-Adha 2023

June 29 to July 2, 2023 in the World

Eid al-Adha takes place between June 29 and July 02, 2023. The Islamic festival is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice or the Major Festival. It is a very important religious holiday for Muslims worldwide. Muslims, who are expected to dress in their finest clothing that day, go to the mosque to pray the prayer of the Eid. Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah (Islamic calendar). The date varies in the Gregorian calendar.

Eid al-Adha honors Abraham (Ibrahim), who was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Ismail). God then intervened and had Abraham by his angel Gabriel (Jibra'il) told, that his sacrifice has already been accepted. On Eid al-Adha today an animal needs to be sacrificed. The meat then has to be divided into three parts: one stays in the family, one needs to be given to the poor, and one needs to be given to friends or relatives.
