International Geodiversity Day is observed on October 06, 2025. It was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2021 and has been celebrated annually since 2022.
The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of geodiversity, which refers to the variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, landforms, soils and natural processes that form the Earth's surface. It promotes the conservation and sustainable use of geodiversity as a key component of nature.
International Geodiversity Day highlights the role of geodiversity in supporting ecosystems, providing natural resources and contributing to climate resilience. UNESCO encourages educational activities, research and policy efforts to recognize the value of geodiversity globally.
