Jump-up Day 2026

Montserrat celebrates Jump-up Day on January 01, 2026. The day is also known as New Year’s Day. It's the day, the Montserrat Festival climaxes. Male dancers, some of them weightlifters, often carrying chains representing slavery, travel door to door and receive small gifts, as Jump-up Day commemorates the emancipation of the slaves. To symbolize this, they jump up from time to time, breaking the chains of slavery. Masqueraders move around the crowded streets, where people gather singing and dancing. Montserrat Festival, which is a version of carnival, starts in the middle of December annually and ends on Jump-up Day. Montserrat is a Caribbean island and part of the chain known as the Lesser Antilles. The island only measures about 39 square miles.
