National Poetry Month 2017

April 1 - 30, 2017 in USA, Canada

National Poetry Month is observed in April 2017. National Poetry Month was inspired by the success of Black History Month and Women's History Month. In 1995, the Academy of American Poets convened a group of publishers, booksellers, librarians, literary organizations, poets, and teachers to discuss the need and usefulness of a similar month long holiday to celebrate poetry.

Poetry is a form of literary art which uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language-such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre-to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.

National Poetry Month has also sparked some debate among writers, most notably from poets such as Charles Bernstein and Richard Howard. Critics suggest that National Poetry Month trivializes the art form and floods the market with books in a matter of just a few weeks, overwhelming readers. (With material from: Wikipedia)
