Pins and Needles Day takes place on the 27th of November 2020. Unexpectedly this date has nothing to do with sewing kits but goes back to the 1930s. In 1937 also on the 27th of November a play had its premiere at the New York Labor Stage Theatre that had been written by Harold Rome and produced by the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union.
The play was called Needles and Pins and focused on the situation of workers during the labor movement in America at that time. Although the play had been replayed in 2010 in London, the origin of Pens and Needles Day had passed out of mind. So it is absolutely ok to do some needlework on Pins and Needles Day but maybe keep in mind how lucky you are to to do that as hobby and not as a worker during America’s 1930s.
