World Basketball Day 2025

World Basketball Day is celebrated on December 21, 2025. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 and is observed annually from 2024 onwards. The date marks the anniversary of the invention of basketball in 1891 by James Naismith.
The aim of the day is to recognize the global popularity and cultural significance of basketball as a sport that promotes teamwork, discipline and inclusion. It also highlights the role of sport in health, youth development and international cooperation.
World Basketball Day supports access to sport for all, especially in under-resourced communities. The United Nations encourages activities that use basketball to advance education, gender equality and peacebuilding. A good way to celebrate the day, is to find a place to play basketball. It is a great way to make new friends, have fun, and stay fit.
