World Vegan Day 2024

November 1, 2024 in the World

Fruits, vegetables and grains are the basis of the vegan diet

The World Vegan Day is celebrated on November 01, 2024. The day was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then President & Chair of the Vegan Society UK. The day is observed annually. The year 2011 marks the 67th anniversary of the term “vegan” and thus the verbally clarified concept of “veganism” as well as the establishment of the Vegan Society.

Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, as well as an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of sentient animals. A follower of veganism is known as a vegan. The term “vegan“ was coined in England in 1944 by Donald Watson. In 1951 the British Vegan Society extended the definition of veganism to mean “the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals”.

An animal product is any material derived from animals, including meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, honey, fur, wool, and silk. Other commonly used, but perhaps less well known, animal products are beeswax, bone char, bone china, carmine, casein, cochineal, gelatin, isinglass, lanolin, lard, rennet, shellac, tallow, whey, and yellow grease. Ethical vegans will not use animal products for clothing, toiletries, or any other reason.
