The International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent is observed on July 25, 2026. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 and has been marked annually since 2024. The date coincides with a long-standing day of recognition celebrated in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The aim of the day is to promote the rights, dignity and achievements of women and girls of African descent. It draws attention to the intersecting forms of discrimination they face and supports efforts toward equality and inclusion.
The International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent encourages cultural recognition, access to education, and protection from violence and systemic barriers. The United Nations promotes visibility and empowerment for women and girls in all sectors of society.
