International Soninke Language Day takes place on September 25, 2025. It was established by UNESCO in 2023 and has been observed annually since 2024. The day promotes the protection and revitalization of the Soninke language, which is also known as Azer, and is spoken by approximately 2.3 million people. The language is primarily spoken in West Africa, with the largest populations in Mali and Mauritania.
International Soninke Language Day supports the recognition of linguistic diversity and the rights of language communities. Also, the day encourages educational and cultural initiatives to safeguard the language. It contributes to broader goals of preserving intangible cultural heritage and promoting multilingualism.
