James Farley Post Office Building during rush hour

Neither Rain nor Snow Day is celebrated on September 07, 2024. The day commemorates the opening of the New York Post Office building on this day in 1914. The James A. Farley Post Office Building is the main post office building in New York City. the building is famous for bearing the inscription: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

This phrase was a translation by Prof. George Herbert Palmer, Harvard University, from an ancient Greek work of Herodotus describing the Persian system of mounted postal carriers c. 500 B.C.E. The inscription was added to the building by William Mitchell Kendall of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the building's architects.

The Farley Post Office once held the distinction of being the only Post Office in New York City open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But in 2009, due to the economic downturn, its windows began to close at 10:00 p.m. (With material from: Wikipedia)
