Scheme of a genetic mutation in case of Trissomy 21

The World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21, 2025. It is a day on which Down Syndrome Organizations throughout the world organize and participate in events to raise public awareness of Down syndrome. The day takes place annually and the first World Down Syndrome Day was held on April 21, 2006.

Often Down Syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is associated with a delay in cognitive ability and physical growth, ad a particular set of facial characteristics. The average IQ of young adults with Down syndrome is around 50, compared to normal children with an IQ of 100. The incidence of Down syndrome is estimated at 4.6 per 10,000 births and it occurs in all human populations.

Down syndrome was first determined a chromosomal disorder in 1959 by French pediatrician and geneticist, Jérôme Lejeune. The date, being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome and is used synonymously with Down syndrome. The original idea was proposed by Stylianos E. Antonarakis. (With material from: Wikipedia)
