The more than 117 million existig lakes are in decline, yet they provide 90 percent of the fresh water. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the ecological, economic and social value of lakes. It highlights the importance of protecting freshwater ecosystems from pollution, overuse and climate-related threats.
World Lake Day promotes sustainable lake management, scientific monitoring and community engagement. The United Nations calls for integrated policies and international cooperation to ensure the conservation of lake systems for present and future generations.
