The International Day of the Snow Leopard takes place on October 23, 2025. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024 to enhance international and regional cooperation in support of efforts to conserve the snow leopard, given its crucial role in the mountain ecosystems of Central and South Asia. The date also recalls the Bishkek Declaration adopted in 2013 by 12 snow leopard range countries, which marked a turning point in global snow leopard conservation.
The aim of the day is to raise global awareness about the threats facing snow leopards, including habitat loss, poaching and climate change. It also promotes cross-border conservation efforts across the mountain ranges where the species lives.
The International Day of the Snow Leopard supports scientific research, local engagement and international cooperation to protect snow leopard populations and their fragile ecosystems. Conservation campaigns and awareness events are held in range countries and beyond.
