On September 05, 2026, the world observes the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls. The United Nations General Assembly adopted this day in 2025, with its first celebration in 2026. It is not to be mixed up with the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9.
This day honors the vital role Indigenous women and girls play in their communities, while shining a spotlight on the intersecting discrimination and inequities they often face, from marginalization to violence, from limited access to resources to underrepresentation.
The observance aims to protect their rights, dignity and contributions - culturally, socially and politically - and to promote their empowerment, including equitable participation in decision-making, protection from violence, preservation of heritage and access to social services.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls calls on governments, UN bodies and civil society to implement concrete measures securing equality, justice and dignity for Indigenous women and girls worldwide.
